FEBRUARY The color is so intense, so full of swift motion, change, and surprise, that it seems to be rhythmic like sound, and to fill the air... Terskey Ala Too Range, Central Tien Shan Mountains. 
MARCH Just before the glow began to fade, two crimson clouds came streaming across the summit like wings of flame? then came darkness and the stars... Meridianal Range. North Enylchek Glacier, Central Tien Shan Mountains. 
APRIL Purple twilight falls on the gorge. The sun hiding behind a ridge paints the sky in the hues of gold and red. Within five or ten minutes this huge massif will be swallowed by an opaque darkness. The Pamirs Mountains, Central Asia. 
MAY The mountains stood in silence, veiled with one blue shadow, while the peaks caught a rosy glow of morning light. The Great Himalayas. 
JUNE Massive spurs alternate with the gorges, plunging abruptly from the shoulders of the snowy peaks, and planting their feet in the green valley... Western Tien Shan Mountains. 
JULY To take the photograph, I had to spend a night on the top of the mountain, in a bamboo jungle. For my sleepless night and my patience, however, I was rewarded by a striking dawn in the clouds and morning haze... Moon Hill, Southern China. 
AUGUST Mountain rises above mountain, peak above peak, all dusky blue in the sweet silence of the twilight; and away up, sun-colored, clear sky. Pamiro-Alay Mountains, Central Asia. 
SEPTEMBER Looking like an ice-bound sea due to the glacial drifts of "waves", the glacier miraculously resembles a rhythmically breathing ocean at evening. Central Tien Shan Mountains. 
OCTOBER Now came the solemn, silent evening... South Enylchek Glacier, Central Asia. 
NOVEMBER How glorious a greeting the sun gives the mountains! Nameless peak of the Western Tien Shan Mountains. 
DECEMBER There, in overawing majesty, one of the highest mountains in the world rises out of the clouds. Lhotse is the fourth highest mountain on Earth. The border between China and Nepal. |
